About the Slovak Language
Slovak is the official language of Slovakia, with around 5 million speakers. It's mutually intelligible with Czech in conversation, but legal vocabulary, civil-document formats, and orthography are distinct enough that a Slovak document should be translated by a Slovak specialist, not a Czech one. Can you translate a birth certificate issued in Czechoslovakia before 1993?
Yes. We translate the document as it stands, keeping the Czechoslovak state name and the issuing registry office exactly as printed, and add a translator's note explaining that the place is now in the Slovak Republic. USCIS wants the record translated, not updated, and the note is what lets an officer connect it to the applicant's stated place of birth.
Will a Czech interpreter do for a Slovak speaker?
For a friendly conversation, often. For testimony, a medical history or an immigration interview, no. Younger Slovak speakers in particular have had far less exposure to Czech since the two countries separated, and a legal or medical term that is nearly right is still wrong on the record.
