Sepedi Interpreter in Ontario, CA

Sepedi interpreters for Ontario courts, hospitals, attorneys and USCIS appointments, in person, by phone or by video.

Prism Linguistics provides Sepedi (Northern Sotho) translators for the affidavits and records that South African Home Affairs certificates do not cover, and Sepedi interpreters for court hearings, medical appointments and USCIS interviews in Ontario and across the United States.

Sepedi Interpreters in Ontario

Our Sepedi interpreters in Ontario are experienced, professional linguists who work in state courts, hospitals, USCIS field offices and law firms, and who ask which Northern Sotho variety a speaker grew up with before taking a Sepedi interpreting assignment.

Most of the people who need a Sepedi interpreter in the United States are older relatives visiting or joining family, and occasionally a witness or a patient whose English is good for daily life and not good enough for a deposition or a diagnosis. Standard Sepedi is the speech of the Pedi heartland around Sekhukhune, and speakers of other Northern Sotho varieties differ enough that we ask the district before assigning anyone. No state runs a court certification exam in Sepedi, so courts use a qualified Sepedi interpreter, usually by phone or video; Sepedi is the kind of rare language courts come to us for.

For an in-person assignment in Ontario we assign a Sepedi interpreter based in or near the city. Telephone and video interpreting can usually be arranged the same day. We serve courts, attorneys, hospitals, USCIS applicants and private individuals; we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor, and we say so up front.

Sepedi Court, Medical and USCIS Interpreters in Ontario

Prism Linguistics supplies professional Sepedi interpreters in Ontario for court hearings, depositions, medical appointments and USCIS interviews, by phone or video where no Sepedi linguist is close enough for in-person work, together with certified translation of any Sepedi-language evidence in the case.

Ontario sits in San Bernardino County, in California's Inland Empire. California merged its municipal courts into one trial court, so felonies, unlimited and limited civil suits, misdemeanors and small claims all belong to the Superior Court of California, County of San Bernardino; matters from Ontario are heard at the Rancho Cucamonga District courthouse, which also covers Chino, Chino Hills, Montclair, Upland and Rialto. Prism Linguistics works from a single head office in New York and assigns a linguist based near Ontario for in-person work.

The Ontario-Montclair School District employs translators for English and Spanish work at district and parent meetings and runs a Mandarin dual language immersion program from kindergarten upward. That district and the Chaffey Joint Union High School District are among the city's largest employers, alongside Ontario International Airport and UPS. Courts and attorneys come to Prism for the languages that are hard to staff locally, and for USCIS-compliant certified translation.

Sepedi to English Translation Services in Ontario

Certified Sepedi to English translation is needed less often than callers expect, because South African certificates are already in English; our Sepedi translators are for the documents written in the language itself, and each Sepedi translation carries a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy prepared to meet USCIS requirements.

Most Sepedi speakers do not need a translation. Sepedi, also called Northern Sotho or Sesotho sa Leboa, is the first language of about 6.2 million South Africans, ten percent of the country at the 2022 census, most of them in Limpopo. The Department of Home Affairs issues the unabridged birth certificate, the marriage certificate and the death certificate in English, so a Sepedi speaker files those with USCIS as they are. What does need a Sepedi translator is the paperwork that is not from Home Affairs: a traditional council letter, a church or school record, a sworn statement in Sepedi, or a handwritten family document in support of a petition.

The trap is the language's own name. The 1993 interim constitution listed Sesotho sa Leboa; the 1996 constitution lists Sepedi; official documents use both, and Northern Sotho as well, and a translation that labels the source language differently from the applicant's own form invites a query. We label it Sepedi and note the other names once.

Every certified Sepedi translation is a complete, word-for-word rendering with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, prepared to meet USCIS requirements. It is done from a clear scan, so a client in Ontario gets the same translator, the same price and the same turnaround as one anywhere else in the country. 2. Get a fixed price within 60 minutes during business hours, and a named Sepedi linguist for interpreting work.
  3. Receive the translation by email as a signed PDF, with a paper copy by mail on request, or confirm the interpreter and the time.

About the Sepedi Language

Sepedi (Northern Sotho, Pedi) is one of South Africa's eleven official languages, spoken by around 4 million people primarily in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng provinces. It's closely related to Sesotho (Southern Sotho) and Setswana. The US Sepedi-speaking community is small; South African civil documents are typically in English and routed accordingly, so direct Sepedi translation is rare.

Sepedi Interpreting in Ontario: FAQs

My South African birth certificate is in English. Do I need anything translated for USCIS?

Usually not. Home Affairs issues birth, marriage and death certificates in English and USCIS accepts them as they are. A Sepedi translator is needed for documents written in Sepedi, such as a traditional council letter, a sworn statement or a family record, and we deliver those with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.

Is Sepedi the same as Sesotho?

No. Sepedi is Northern Sotho, spoken mainly in Limpopo; Sesotho is Southern Sotho, spoken in Lesotho and the Free State, and has its own page on this site. They are related and a speaker of one follows some of the other, but an interpreter should be booked in the speaker's own language. We are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor.

Do you have an office in Ontario?

No. Our only office is in New York. Sepedi translation is done remotely from a scan, so location makes no difference to the document work. For in-person interpreting in Ontario we assign a Sepedi interpreter who is based in or near the city, and phone or video interpreting is available anywhere in the United States.
