About the Russian Language

Roughly 900,000 people in the United States speak Russian as their first language, with the largest communities in Brooklyn, Northern California, South Florida, and the Pacific Northwest. Most of the Russian translation work we do is civil — birth and marriage certificates, internal passports, divorce decrees, academic diplomas for credential evaluation — usually for USCIS, family court, or university admissions. Russian itself has around 260 million speakers worldwide and is also widely used across Belarus, Kazakhstan, the Baltic states, and the broader post-Soviet diaspora. The Cyrillic script means transliteration of names needs care, particularly on legal documents.

  • Primary regions: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, the Baltics and Russian-speaking communities in New York, California, Florida, Washington and Massachusetts
  • Language origin / family: Indo-European, East Slavic language family
  • Estimated speakers: Around 260 million speakers worldwide
