View transcription service →Persian is the Western Iranian language known as Farsi in Iran, Dari in Afghanistan and Tajik in Tajikistan, with roughly 110 million speakers when all three are counted together. Iran and Afghanistan write it in the Perso-Arabic script; Tajikistan uses Cyrillic. The three standards share most of their grammar and formal vocabulary, so a Farsi speaker can read a Dari document, but everyday speech, pronunciation and official terminology differ enough that we assign interpreters by country. In the United States the largest Persian-speaking communities are Iranian, followed by Afghans resettled since 2021, and most translation work is Iranian shenasnameh booklets, Afghan tazkiras, degree certificates and asylum evidence.
