Who actually needs a Norwegian interpreter. Norwegians speak English well, and a working-age Norwegian in the US will not. Skatteetaten (the Norwegian Tax Administration) runs the National Population Register and issues printouts in English or Norwegian, stamped and signed, so a fresh birth record often needs no Norwegian translator. Two written standards and three extra letters are the traps. A Norwegian document is in Bokmål or, for roughly one public document in ten, Nynorsk, and the same institution name reads differently in each. Names carry æ, ø and å, which US systems flatten to ae, o and a, so Bjørn Sørensen is already two people on paper before the translation starts. We keep the Norwegian spelling the passport shows, note the flattened form where it appears on a US record, and reproduce the issuing authority as printed rather than inventing an English office name for Statsforvalteren.
