Prism Linguistics provides Minnan (Southern Min) interpreters matched to the speaker's variety, Hokkien, Taiwanese or Teochew, for USCIS interviews, court hearings and medical appointments in Simi Valley and across the United States, with certified translation of the Chinese documents behind them.
Our Minnan interpreters in Simi Valley are qualified, professional linguists who work in state and immigration courts, USCIS field offices and hospitals, and every Minnan interpreting assignment is placed with a Hokkien, Taiwanese or Teochew speaker to match the person, never with whoever is nearest.
When a booking for a Minnan interpreter says only Minnan or Fujianese, we ask three things: which side of the strait, which county, and how old the speaker is. Working-age people from Fujian and Taiwan usually manage in Mandarin; grandparents, rural speakers and anyone giving detailed testimony often do not, and an interpreter from the wrong variety will follow the gist and miss the detail. A Teochew grandmother should not be given a Taiwanese interpreter. No state runs a court certification exam in any Minnan variety, so courts use a qualified Minnan interpreter in the specific dialect; hospitals that take federal funds must provide a Minnan interpreter at no cost; and at USCIS the interpreter renders each answer as given.
For an in-person assignment in Simi Valley we assign a Minnan interpreter based in or near the city. Telephone and video interpreting can usually be arranged the same day. We serve courts, attorneys, hospitals, USCIS applicants and private individuals; we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor, and we say so up front.
Prism Linguistics supplies experienced Minnan interpreters in Simi Valley for USCIS interviews, court hearings, depositions and medical appointments, assigned in the speaker's own variety, in person, by phone or by video, with certified Minnan translation of the Chinese documents that go with the case.
Simi Valley is in Ventura County. California unified its trial courts, so the city has no municipal court; matters arising here belong to the Ventura County Superior Court, which keeps the East County Courthouse in Simi Valley alongside the Hall of Justice in Ventura, where the civil, family law, probate and criminal and traffic divisions sit. Courts and attorneys here come to Prism Linguistics for the rare languages other providers cannot supply, and for USCIS and immigration filings.
Simi Valley Unified School District maintains a Spanish-language section for families alongside its English Language Development program and District English Learner Advisory Committee, and Spanish is the language named throughout. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum sits in the city and draws international visitors and events. Prism's head office in New York is its only office; interpreters and translators work nationwide, and for a hearing, deposition or medical appointment a linguist based in or near Simi Valley is assigned.
Local Minnan interpreting services in Simi Valley and the surrounding area come from the same nationwide network, so a court, hospital or attorney in any of the cities below books a Minnan interpreter in the right variety through one request.
Our only office is in New York. For in-person work in Simi Valley we assign a Minnan interpreter who is based in or near the city, and the same Minnan linguists cover the surrounding area:
Certified Minnan to English translation is, on paper, Chinese to English: the mainland notarial certificate, the hukou and the Taiwanese household registration transcript. Our Minnan translators know which characters and which romanisation the passport uses and sign a Certificate of Translation Accuracy prepared to meet USCIS requirements.
Minnan is a family name, not a single language. Southern Min is the largest branch of Min Chinese, with about 34 million native speakers on a 2025 estimate, and it covers Hokkien (the speech of Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou in southern Fujian), Taiwanese, which is Hokkien as spoken in Taiwan, and Teochew from eastern Guangdong. Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou and Taiwanese speakers understand one another; Teochew shares most of its sound system with Hokkien but only around a third of its vocabulary, so intelligibility is limited. We keep separate Hokkien, Taiwanese and Teochew (Chaochow) pages for that reason. Documents are simpler than speech: a Minnan translation order is a Chinese record, either a mainland notarial certificate from a Notary Public Office with the household register behind it, or a Taiwanese household registration transcript. The translation question is which characters and which romanisation, since a Taiwanese passport and a mainland passport spell the same family name differently. We follow the passport.
Every certified Minnan translation is a complete, word-for-word rendering with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, prepared to meet USCIS requirements. It is done from a clear scan, so a client in Simi Valley gets the same translator, the same price and the same turnaround as one anywhere else in the country. Minnan (Southern Min) is the umbrella term for the Southern Min Chinese varieties, including Hokkien, Teochew, Hainanese, and others, spoken by around 50 million people across southern Fujian, eastern Guangdong, Hainan, Taiwan, and Southeast Asian Chinese communities. The US Minnan-speaking community is concentrated in New York, Houston, and California. Our Minnan translation work overlaps with general Chinese, civil documents are usually in written Mandarin Chinese.
Book a Minnan interpreter in the variety the person actually speaks. Hokkien from southern Fujian and Taiwanese are mutually intelligible, so either label works for those speakers; Teochew from eastern Guangdong is a separate Southern Min language with limited intelligibility and needs its own interpreter. Tell us where the speaker is from and we assign accordingly.
Documents from Fujian, Taiwan and Guangdong are written in Chinese characters, not in Minnan, so we translate the Chinese record into English with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy and spell names to match the passport. Minnan interpreting is where the variety matters; the paperwork is Chinese.
