Mien (Iu Mien) is a Hmong-Mien language spoken by around 800,000 people across southern China, northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The US Mien-American community is concentrated in Sacramento and Oakland (California), Portland (Oregon), and Seattle — descendants of refugees who supported US forces during the Vietnam War era and were resettled afterwards. Our Mien translation work is mostly USCIS family-reunification paperwork and the citizenship and benefits documents needed by older first-generation community members. Mien is written with a Latin-based system developed in the 1980s.
