About the Mien Language
Mien (Iu Mien) is a Hmong-Mien language spoken by around 800,000 people across southern China, northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The US Mien-American community is concentrated in Sacramento and Oakland (California), Portland (Oregon), and Seattle, descendants of refugees who supported US forces during the Vietnam War era and were resettled afterwards. Our Mien translation work is mostly USCIS family-reunification paperwork and the citizenship and benefits documents needed by older first-generation community members. Mien is written with a Latin-based system developed in the 1980s.
