A Mayan interpreter is really a K'iche' or Mam interpreter; there is no single Mayan language. Mayan is a family of roughly thirty languages spoken across Guatemala, southern Mexico and Belize, and Guatemala's 2003 National Languages Law recognises 22 of them: K'iche', Mam, Q'anjob'al, Kaqchikel, Q'eqchi', Ixil, Chuj, Akateko, Popti', Tz'utujil, Achi and others. Mam and K'iche' rank among the ten most common languages in US immigration court on Department of Justice data, and Q'anjob'al is in the top 25, yet ICE data cited by the Center for American Progress showed interpretation actually provided more than half the time for only two of the ten most requested Indigenous languages. A Spanish interpreter at a credible fear interview is where a Mayan language case is lost. No state certifies court interpreters in any Mayan language, so courts use registered or otherwise qualified interpreters; we send direct Mayan-to-English interpreters where we can, and we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor. This is the most common Mayan language problem in immigration proceedings. Tell us the court, the hearing type and the client's municipality, and we assign a K'iche' interpreter direct into English where possible, or a relay through Spanish if the court insists. The same applies to Mam, Q'anjob'al, Q'eqchi' and the rest.
Do I need a Mayan translator for a Guatemalan birth certificate?
No. RENAP issues birth certificates and the DPI in Spanish, so the certified translation for USCIS is from Spanish to English. You may need a Mayan language interpreter for the applicant, and a translator's note where the record differs from what the applicant says in their own language.
