It's one of just two surviving Baltic languages (the other being Lithuanian) — a distinct Indo-European branch unrelated to Russian or the Germanic languages around the Baltic. The Latvian-American community is small and concentrated in New Jersey, Boston, Wisconsin, and the Pacific Northwest, with deep roots in the post-WWII displaced-persons resettlement.
