S'gaw or Pwo? They are not the same language. S'gaw Karen, Pwo Karen and Pa'O are separate branches and are not mutually intelligible, and Pwo itself splits into eastern, western and northern varieties that do not understand one another. S'gaw is the variety Minnesota's health department publishes in and its courts staff, so it is the usual default, but a Pwo speaker given a S'gaw interpreter will nod and understand a fraction, which is worse than no interpreter at all. We ask which Karen at intake, every time.
Minnesota has the largest Karen community in the country, more than 20,000 people in 2025, and its courts already list both S'gaw and eastern Pwo Karen interpreters on their roster; Nebraska, upstate New York, Indiana, Texas and California hold the next largest communities. No state runs a certification exam in Karen and it is not among the languages tested through the National Center for State Courts, so courts use a registered or otherwise qualified Karen interpreter; we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor. Hospitals and clinics that take federal money must provide a Karen interpreter free of charge, which matters for the elders who arrived from the camps in their fifties and sixties. At USCIS a Karen interpreter is there to render, not to help.

Most Karen applicants have no birth certificate. Births in the camps along the Thai border were the Thai government's to register, not UNHCR's, and for years they mostly were not registered; Thailand does not issue a certificate retrospectively for someone born in a camp, although it has issued birth certificates to some 5,000 newborns there in recent years. What a Karen family usually holds instead is a UNHCR registration record, a camp household or ration card, Thai-issued birth certificates for the youngest children, school and clinic papers from the camp, and, for relatives born inside Burma, a Burmese household list or identity card. For adjustment of status, a family petition or naturalization, USCIS accepts secondary evidence and affidavits where the primary record never existed, so the Karen translation says plainly what each document is rather than dressing a ration card up as a civil record.
Karen-language documents themselves are usually in S'gaw Karen, written in the Burmese-derived script created in the 1830s; Pwo Karen uses scripts of its own. A translator who reads only Burmese will misread both, so Prism assigns each Karen translator by script as well as by language.
