About the Japanese Language

Japanese is the rare case where American demand for translation services spans an unusually wide industry mix — automotive and industrial-equipment documentation, patents, anime and manga rights contracts, academic research, and the civil paperwork (koseki family registers, passports, academic transcripts) that comes with intercompany transfers and immigration. Japan itself has about 125 million native speakers, plus established Japanese-American communities in Hawaii, Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York. The language uses three scripts together — kanji, hiragana, and katakana — and translators choose carefully when adapting names and technical terms for English-language documents.

  • Primary regions: Japan and Japanese-American communities in California, Hawaii, Washington and New York
  • Language origin / family: Japonic language family
  • Estimated speakers: Around 125 million speakers worldwide
