About the Ethiopian Language

There is no single "Ethiopian" language, Ethiopia has more than 80 indigenous languages from several different families. The most-spoken include Amharic (the federal working language), Afaan Oromo (the largest by speaker count), Tigrinya (also spoken in Eritrea), and Somali (in the Somali Region). For US-bound translation work from Ethiopia, the practical question is which Ethiopian language the source document is in. We then assign the project to the appropriate specialist, see our separate pages for each Ethiopian language we handle.

  • Primary regions: Ethiopia
  • Language origin / family: Ethiopia
  • Estimated speakers: 32 million
