View transcription service →British Sign Language (BSL) is the sign language used by around 150,000 Deaf people in the United Kingdom. It's a complete, independent visual language with its own grammar — not a signed form of English — and crucially, it is unrelated to American Sign Language (ASL), which descends from French Sign Language. For US-bound translation, BSL is rarely the source: most Deaf-community translation work in the US uses ASL. BSL-to-English-text or BSL-to-ASL translation is occasional, typically tied to UK-to-US Deaf-community emigration or international Deaf event interpreting.
