Azerbaijani — also called Azeri — is the official language of the Republic of Azerbaijan and is spoken by roughly 30 million people, with the largest population actually in northern Iran rather than Azerbaijan itself. The language is Turkic, closely related to Turkish. Azerbaijani in Azerbaijan is written in the Latin alphabet (since a 1991 reform); in Iran it's typically written in Perso-Arabic script, so source-document origin determines the translator.
