American English Interpreters in Indianapolis

Prism Linguistics does not supply American English interpreters in Indianapolis, because interpreting always pairs two languages and American English is the one a person is interpreted into. Someone who needs an interpreter gets one for their own language; under American English we provide transcription, editing and certified translation.

There is no such thing as an American English interpreter, and we do not pretend otherwise. What people who search for one usually need is one of three things. The first is American English transcription: a deposition, a hearing recording or a physician's dictation turned into a clean, timestamped transcript, with a certified translation attached if part of the audio is in another language. The second is editing for non-native writers: an affidavit, personal statement, research paper or business letter rewritten into idiomatic American English without changing its meaning, which matters when an asylum declaration was first drafted by someone thinking in another language. The third is plain-language rewriting, turning a dense notice into American English that a limited-English reader can follow before it is translated.

For an in-person assignment in Indianapolis we assign an American English interpreter based in or near the city. Telephone and video interpreting can usually be arranged the same day. We serve courts, attorneys, hospitals, USCIS applicants and private individuals; we are a private agency, not a court-appointed vendor, and we say so up front.

American English Court, Medical and USCIS Interpreters in Indianapolis

There are no American English interpreters to book, in Indianapolis or anywhere else. What Prism Linguistics provides is certified American English translation of foreign records for court, medical and USCIS use, American English transcription of hearings and dictation, and editing of English written by non-native speakers.

Indianapolis and Marion County have shared a consolidated government since Unigov took effect in 1970. The Marion Circuit Court hears civil matters and criminal cases alongside the Marion Superior Court, whose divisions cover criminal, civil, family, probate and juvenile work, while nine elected township small claims courts, in Center, Decatur, Franklin, Lawrence, Perry, Pike, Warren, Washington and Wayne townships, take the smallest civil disputes.

Indianapolis holds the largest Burmese population in the United States, settled mainly on the Southside and predominantly Chin, with Zomi, Hakha Chin and Karen congregations each using a different tongue. Since autumn 2024 Perry Township Schools has taught a Chin heritage language course in Hakha Chin at both of its high schools, run with the Chin Community of Indiana. Courts and attorneys come to Prism for Hakha Chin, Zomi and Karen, which most providers cannot supply, and for USCIS filings. Our only office is in New York, and in-person work goes to a linguist near Indianapolis.

American English to English Translation Services in Indianapolis

Certified translation into American English is the bulk of the work under this heading: a birth certificate, diploma, police clearance or court record from any of our other languages, rendered by a qualified American English translator with US dates, spelling and legal vocabulary and a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.

Every certified translation ends in American English. USCIS regulations (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)) require a full English translation of any foreign-language document, with the translator's certification that it is complete and accurate and that they are competent to translate it; USCIS does not require notarization and keeps no list of approved translators. So an American English translation page is really about the target: a birth certificate, diploma or police clearance from any of our 326 languages rendered into the American English that an adjudicator, a court clerk or a credential evaluator expects, with month-first dates, US spelling and US legal vocabulary. British-English translations done abroad are the recurring problem: a UK-trained translator writes colour and licence and 12/09 for 12 September, and a USCIS officer or a university registrar reads that date as December 9. We re-edit those into American English, check them against the original, and re-certify. We also prepare American English source documents, an affidavit or a medical record, for translation abroad, because a clean source is the cheapest way to get a clean translation.

Every certified American English translation is a complete, word-for-word rendering with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy, prepared to meet USCIS requirements. It is done from a clear scan, so a client in Indianapolis gets the same translator, the same price and the same turnaround as one anywhere else in the country. How to Book an American English Interpreter in Indianapolis

  1. Send the document or the appointment details. A phone photo is fine for a quote; a clean scan is needed for the certified copy. For interpreting, tell us the date, the setting and where the speaker is from.
  2. Get a fixed price within 60 minutes during business hours, and a named American English linguist for interpreting work.
  3. Receive the translation by email as a signed PDF, with a paper copy by mail on request, or confirm the interpreter and the time.

About the American English Language

American English isn't a translation target so much as a translation destination, most of our work involves translating other languages into American English for USCIS, US courts, US universities, and US institutions. American English differs from British English in spelling (color vs colour, organize vs organise), punctuation, vocabulary, and some legal terminology. We adapt to American English by default for US-bound documents: American spelling, US date format (month-day-year), US measurement conventions, and the legal-document conventions US institutions expect. UK-English documents being submitted to US institutions are usually translated into American English on request.

American English Interpreting in Indianapolis: FAQs

My translation was done in British English abroad. Should I get an American English version?

We recommend it. The USCIS rule asks for a full English translation and does not distinguish British from American English, but a UK translation uses day-first dates and British spelling and terms, so 12/09 can be read as December 9 by a USCIS officer or a registrar. We re-edit the translation into American English, check it against the original, and issue a new signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy.

Do you provide American English interpreters?

No, because interpreting always runs between two languages. If a person needs an interpreter, we book one for their own language, and American English is the language they are interpreted into. What we provide under American English is transcription of English audio, editing of English written by non-native speakers, and certified translation into American English from any of our other languages.

Do you have an office in Indianapolis?

No. Our only office is in New York. American English translation is done remotely from a scan, so location makes no difference to the document work. For in-person interpreting in Indianapolis we assign an American English interpreter who is based in or near the city, and phone or video interpreting is available anywhere in the United States.
